CSI: Cyber will be back this fall, but Peter MacNicol (Simon Sifter) won’t be part of the cast during season two. According to Deadline, MacNicol’s exit is the result of creative decisions behind the scenes, and has nothing to do with the news that Ted Danson’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation character, DB Russell, is joining the Cyber team. Simon was Avery Ryan’s (Patricia Arquette) boss, but she will not have one now that MacNicol is leaving the show. This announcement seems to be part of the “retooling” that was previously mentioned in connection with Cyber’s sophomore season.
CBS announced today that CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will end with a two-hour TV movie, as previously reported. Original stars William Petersen (Gil Grissom) and Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows) are set to reprise their roles in the series-ending storyline, which will air on Sunday, September 27. “We’re actually a little misty-eyed about this one,” CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said. “It was a series that was so important to this network, and we will have an epic finale to start the season.”
Additionally, it was announced that current CSI star Ted Danson (DB Russell) would join the cast of CSI: Cyber going into the show’s second season. He will be a series regular, but there is no further information about how else the cast might be affected by the “retooling” mentioned here. “It’s going to be a season of very big events,” Tassler revealed.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’s leading man Ted Danson (DB Russell) has been cast in the 10-episode second season of FX’s anthology miniseries Fargo. Season two will serve as a prequel for the show’s first season, and it will feature an entirely new cast. Danson will play Hank Larsson, the Sheriff of Rock County, Minnesota in 1979. The character is described as an “unflappable WWII vet who embodies a certain cowboy poetry.”
The CSI cast is currently filming the season 15 finale, which will be finished by the time Fargo starts shooting later this month. Fargo will film from January to May, which should not interfere with CSI’s schedule if the show returns for a sixteenth season.
