"Entropy" sneak peeks

Criminal Minds returns from the winter hiatus with a new episode tonight at 9:00pm ET/PT. Fist, check out this extended preview for “Entropy”, featuring Dr Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and guest star Aubrey Plaza (Cat Adams). (You can also find it on CBS.com.)

And here’s another scene from the episode, which features Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson), Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness), Reid, Dr Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler) and JJ Jareau (AJ Cook). (It’s also available on CBS.com, CBS Press Express and SpoilerTV.)

TV Line posted this question and answer last month:

Are there any Reid stories coming up on Criminal Minds? –Deane

As first reported by TVLine, Reid will be back in a big way in the midseason premiere, which is titled “Entropy” and airs Jan. 13. In that episode, the BAU implements an elaborate strategy to try and take down the “Dirty Dozen” hitmen ring, with Reid playing a central role — when he’s not on his “hot” date with Aubrey Plaza, I reckon.

TV Line also shared an exclusive clip from “Entropy”, which you can watch here. The link includes an interview with Plaza about her guest-starring role in the episode, including this excerpt:

TVLINE | I was surprised when I heard you were going to be on Criminal Minds. The show’s not exactly a laugh-riot.

I know. Isn’t that crazy?

TVLINE | Was that the point? To do something that defied people’s expectations of you?

Matthew and I are friends and he sent me the script and said, “I know this sounds crazy, but this is a really special episode and it involves my character and… would you read it?” So I read the script and it’s basically a 65-page psychological thriller. To be totally honest, I haven’t watched much of the show. I just thought playing that role would be really fun. There aren’t many opportunities for me to play a psychopath that has planted a bomb in a restaurant and who’s holding a gun under a table trying to kill an FBI agent. That’s some juicy stuff. I don’t care what show it’s on.

Executive Producer Erica Messer spoke to TV Guide about the episode. She addressed Reid’s return after being absent for several episodes, along with the plan to track down the “Dirty Dozen” hitmen ring. Here’s a quote:

Aubrey’s [character] is a huge part of that plan. There are a lot of twists to it and it feels like old-school Criminal Minds. It’s an amazing episode written by Breen Frazier and Matthew is really at the center of it, which is nice because Dr. Reid has been away with his mom. We wanted to be able to come back and kick-start the new year by acknowledging our arc that got established in the premiere and having it dovetail with Matthew’s return to the BAU. That was the goal and Aubrey Plaza was the dream, and it happened. She and Matthew are friends and did a movie together [Life After Beth]. They are fantastic in it. It’s an edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller almost, and Dr. Reid is forced to share some things he never has before.
