Hello World!

I'm not much of a reader of thrillers, but Dan Brown is making a convert of me.

Both Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code begin with grisly murders that lead to international crime investigations, but by the time the whodunit has been solved, the questions of who's guilty and why have been eclipsed by bigger issues of faith, spirituality versus organized religion, fanaticism and the lengths to which people will go to protect their beliefs.

I'd read most of the source material for The Da Vinci Code, so while I thought the story was well-told, there weren't any big revelations for me. But I knew little about the history of the Illuminati before Angels and Demons and now I'm fascinated.

I'd never heard of Brown until I got a copy of The Da Vinci Code to review. That's presently a bestseller, so his books are everywhere, but I missed the earlier ones when they first came out. I hunted up his 1998 Digital Fortress, a techno-thriller in which the National Security Agency is held hostage by a dangerous fragment of computer code that threatens to devastate U.S. intelligence.

Normally I don't go for stories like this, but I'm curious to see what Brown will do with cyber-reality.

Why can't the CSIs get dates?
All work and no play makes Greg a blue boy.
It probably has something to do with the fact that every time Horatio Caine has sex with a woman, she dies.
Shower sex loses its allure when there's lemons involved.
These people collect body fluids for a living. Then again, if David the coroner can get laid...
They can get dates, I bet. We just don't see it.
Three words: Hank the Skank.

Today's Television Listings

Tonight at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, CBS will show "Simple Man" on CSI Miami. Here's the official synopsis of the episode:

Before Horatio is set to testify at a murder case in which the defendant is the husband of a city councilwoman, he's given new facts that could prove the man is innocent but, there is new information which revolves around the discovery of a second victim who matches the killer's profile if the man on trial isn't guilty.

TNN will rerun the pilot of CSI at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time tonight. Here is a summary of the episode that launched the franchise:

Gil Grissom is the supervisor of the graveyard shift of Las Vegas' elite crime scene investigators. Holly Gribbs, fresh out of the academy, joins the team. Jim Brass is head of the unit and is trying to scare Gribbs from CSI. Catherine Willows, mother of a young daughter, is the number two CSI on this shift. Warrick Brown and Nick Stokes are competing to solve their 100th case to earn a promotion to CSI 3. Grissom investigates a murder staged to look like a suicide with precious little evidence. Warrick and Catherine take the case of a drunk who breaks into the house where he had been staying and is shot to death. Nick talks to a man who picked up a woman who drugged and robbed him.

Thursday night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the CSI episode "One Hit Wonder" will rerun on CBS. The official synopsis states:

Catherine takes the point in the investigation of an escalating series of peeping tom incidents. The crew is racing to stop the attacker before his crimes become more serious assaults. Meanwhile, Sara reopens the dormant case of her friend, a district attorney. The DA is facing surgery to remove a bullet she got in an attack that killed her husband three years prior.
