Harper Helps College-Bound Students

CSI: New York's Hill Harper (Dr Sheldon Hawkes) will have a scholarship programme for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America named in his honor.

As CSI Files previously reported, Harper actively works to educate and motivate the youth of America. He is a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and he is currently serving as the spokesperson for the HBCU Empower Me Tour, which was created by the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). The UNCF has created a scholarship programme in Harper's name for the Big Brothers Big Sisters organisation.

The Hill Harper Mentoring Scholarship will be given to college bound seniors who are "Bigs" or "Littles" in the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme. Criteria will be based on financial need. The funding for the scholarship will come from 10% of the sales of The Black List Volume 1, a Freemind Ventures production which featured African-American leaders. The DVD can be purchased exclusively at Target stores and Target.com.

"I am honored to have a scholarship that represents so much that I believe in named for me. This comes at a time when President [Barack] Obama is urging Americans to serve and First Lady Michelle Obama is asking us to consider making that service mentoring at-risk children," Harper said in a press release. "Children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are among America's most vulnerable – kids who live in poverty or single-parent homes or households where a parent is incarcerated. Research finds having a Big Brother or Big Sister increases a child's chances of succeeding in school and staying away from negative influences."
