Larroquette’s ‘CSI:NY’ Role Will Inspire Sympathy

Tonight marks John Larroquette’s third and final appearance on CSI: New York, and fans will discover Chief Carver’s connection to the death of his sister in “Justified”. Spoilers after the jump!

Larroquette revealed that his character did have something to do with his sister’s death, but fans should wait to see the whole story before they draw conclusions. “As much as it points toward him being [the villain], that opinion may be altered by the end of the episode,” the actor told TV Guide. “We find an empathy and, by the end, a sympathy for his condition and his history that we’ll discover.”

Executive producer Pam Veasey added that the character of Ted Carver was brought in to challenge Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise). “It’s nice sometimes to see Mac have a worthy adversary or a boss who questions him,” she explained. “Mac’s a very moral guy. He’s a guy who believes in authority and respects it tremendously. He expects it of the people who work for him and he sends it up the chain of command.”

When Mac begins to suspect that Carver had a role in the death of his sister, he goes after the high-ranking NYPD officer. However, things change by the end of the episode. “They grow to a mutual trust,” Veasey said. “They go from being a boss and a subordinate to two men who just understand family, and they become more compassionate toward each other. As you peel back the onion, you find out how deeply personal it is to Carver and what involvement he had in his sister’s death. He may not have committed a crime, but he played a significant part.”

Larroquette’s current story arc is now complete, but the actor might be interested in returning to CSI: NY if the opportunity ever presents itself. “It’s something I’d be interested in doing,” he said. “I think that perhaps by the end of the third episode that door is pretty much closed, but you never know.”
