Hello World!

September is breathing down our necks right now, and though I'm sorry to see what has been an all-too short summer come to an end, I am excited about the fall TV season. When Angel was cancelled last spring, Friends ended its ten-year run, and Alias and 24 were pushed back to mid-season, I figured I'd actually for once have a light TV-viewing schedule for the fall.

Ha. That was before I started hearing about all of the new shows coming this fall. Last fall, I managed to avoid picking up a single new show, but I already have one shoo-in (CSI: New York, of course), and several strong possibilities. Here are the shows I'll at least be checking out once or twice this fall:

1. CSI: New York

The sure thing, but even if it wasn't a CSI show, I'd probably be giving it whirl, if just for star Gary Sinise, one of the most talented and versatile actors working today. Many know him from his performance as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, but my favorite role of Sinise's is probably his moving, quiet turn as George in Of Mice and Men. Sinise will make a perfect CSI leading man alongside William Petersen and David Caruso.

2. Joey

I confess, I'm a huge Friends fan. I watch the reruns frequently, and I'm going to miss my favorite comedy this fall. While many expect Joey to fail, I think it's got potential. The previews have been pretty darn funny, and it even got some grudging good reports at the fall upfronts (save for Ashley Scott's character, who has since been recast). Friends's biggest strength was its characters, and I think Matt LeBlanc and the writers have a decent chance of creating a show that can stand separately from its parent show.

3. Lost

This show probably has the most inventive premise: an airplane crashlands on an island, forcing a bunch of strangers to work together to survive. It sounds like a bad reality show, but with J. J. Abrams behind it, I suspect it will be exciting and surprising.

4. Jack and Bobby

The new show about two brothers, one of whom will become president in the year 2049, looked intriguing, but it wasn't a must-see for me until my copy of this week's Entertainment Weekly arrived in the mail with a promo DVD containing the show's first episode. It's genius marketing strategy, and it's totally going to work on me. I'll definitely be watching that first episode.

Tonight, CBS will air the CSI: Miami episode "Complications". Here is a TV Guide synopsis of the episode:

An anesthesiologist who worked in a beauty clinic is discovered swinging from a rope in his two-story condo, but the investigation points to murder, not suicide. The case intensifies when it's learned that the doctor lost a patient the week before during routine plastic surgery and that the victim's husband believes she was killed.

On Thursday, September 2nd, CBS will show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's "Coming of Rage". TV Guide describes the episode:

Grissom investigates the murder of a 15-year-old boy found beaten to death at a construction site, possibly with a hammer; Nick probes the fatal shooting of a newlywed outside of her new house while her husband and ex-hubby fought in the yard.
