The summer non-ratings period is finally upon us Down Under, the time of year when everyone flees their TV sets as the Australia networks schedule all the US programs that they bought and were subsequently cancelled. As an indication of how bad things are: we're still suffering through Just Shoot Me.
Summer does offer some rays of television sunshine, however, in the form of "risky" shows that don't have the mass appeal of CSI and Law & Order. The West Wing and Gilmore Girls both flourished over summer, and I hope to see them back on the schedule again this year. We'll also have a chance to take a look at the Emmy-winning Arrested Development, even if the episodes are being burned off at 10:30 p.m.
There's also plenty of CSI repeats to go around, not that there weren't enough reruns during the ratings period. Unfortunately, when a show rates almost as well in repeats, as CSI tends to do in Australia, the networks prefer to string things out a bit. That said, the fourth season was stronger than the third, with quite a few stand-out episodes, including "Jackpot", "Homebodies", "Paper or Plastic?" and "Bloodlines". For my pick of the season, it would have to be a tie between "Invisible Evidence" and "Butterflied", both of which number among the show's best-ever episodes.

This Week's Television Listings
At 10:00 p.m. tonight, CBS will be showing the first-run CSI: Miami episode "After The Fall". Here's how the network describes the episode:
The CSIs must investigate when a pedestrian is killed after a man falls from a building and lands on him. Horatio and the team find that the victim found on the sidewalk is not the same man who fell from the building, but the unfortunate person he landed on. The CSIs discover that the fallen victim is in possession of a sex DVD involving a top Miami criminal judge and a woman with a sordid sex life. Now, when the woman is found dead, the team must delve into the complicated personal lives of those in Miami's judicial system in order to find the killer.
At 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, CBS will air CSI: New York's "Officer Blue". Here's a preview of the episode:
When a New York City police officer is shot off of his horse, Mac and Stella must comb the city for suspects. The only shard of evidence is the bullet lodged in the officer's horse. Mac must make the painful decision to either save the animal or analyze the evidence. Meanwhile, Aiden works on the case of a young city kid found dead and badly burned in an alley in Queens.
There will be no new episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation this week, with CBS showing a repeat of the season premiere, "Viva Las Vegas" at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2:
A wild night in Las Vegas has the CSIs simultaneously investigating four fatalities. Greg Sanders' first day in the field has him assisting Grissom's investigation of a fatal nightclub shooting. Meanwhile, Catherine probes into the death of a stripper found in a Las Vegas hotel suite. Across town, Warrick is called to an apartment building to investigate possible foul play in the death of a man found electrocuted in his bathtub. Lastly, Nick and Sara investigate a body found buried wearing an alien costume near Area 51. Back in the lab, Greg Sanders' replacement, Chandra, is overwhelmed by the fast-paced world of the CSIs.
Spike TV is scheduled to broadcast five season two episodes of CSI every weekday night this week. The full listing can be found here.
