Hello World!

I'm back from a month driving across the country and back with my family. I thought fondly of this column particularly in Las Vegas, setting for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and home of the Star Trek Experience, which was my younger son's favorite thing about the entire trip.

We drove along parts of old Route 66 through the southwest, stopped at churches in Albuquerque and reservations in Montana. Saw Cadillac Ranch in Texas and the Corn Palace in South Dakota. Crossed the Mississippi in Missouri going out and Minnesota on the way back. Visited several national parks — Little Bighorn, Devil's Tower, Petrified Forest, the Grand Canyon and the Badlands, to name a few.

It's really striking, driving across the U.S., how much entertainment serves as common cultural currency among people from very different backgrounds. We debated Harry Potter with the rural Oregonians on the camp site next to ours in Idaho; my sons played Yu-Gi-Oh with previously unknown cousins in Missouri; I bonded over Viggo Mortensen with a niece-by-marriage I had met only once before.

But I'm way behind on current phenomena — missed most of the news from the TCA press tour, found out days after the fact about Katharine Hepburn's death, didn't go to a movie for more than a month. I did manage to see Seabiscuit on opening weekend, but I only saw Pirates of the Caribbean last Saturday...weeks after most of my friends.

Bear with me while I catch up and learn to write in British again.

Why can't the CSIs get dates?
All work and no play makes Greg a blue boy.
It probably has something to do with the fact that every time Horatio Caine has sex with a woman, she dies.
Shower sex loses its allure when there's lemons involved.
These people collect body fluids for a living. Then again, if David the coroner can get laid...
They can get dates, I bet. We just don't see it.
Three words: Hank the Skank.
