Two back-to-back shows combine to solve a murder mystery.

A special night of CBS programming will begin with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation at 9:00pm EST and continue with Without a Trace at 10:00pm EST. The two hour event brings Jack Malone (Anthony LaPaglia) to Las Vegas in pursuit of a missing boy in "Who and What" and then sends Gil Grissom (William Petersen) back to New York City with him to try to catch a killer in "Where and Why".

Petersen and LaPaglia told TV Guide that they had known each other for a number of years before filming the crossover. In fact, the idea for the crossover itself was several years in the making. It started after the two actors nearly filmed a movie with CSI director Danny Cannon. "Danny thought it would be fun for us all to work together, so we've talked about this [crossover] on and off for four years now," Petersen explained. "It was a question of the right time and whether there was going to be a script or not. We didn't want to do it just because CBS wanted it."

The crossover finally did happen, and both episodes will air back-to-back on November 8. The plot is based on a real case, and it finally gets Petersen and LaPaglia together on one project. The story begins with a dead boy in Las Vegas, and there is a link to a case that the New York Missing Persons Squad of the FBI has been working on for six years. Jack Malone makes his way to Vegas to pursue the lead. The investigation finds him working with Grissom and "the difference in our styles becomes apparent right away," LaPaglia said.
