Hello World!

I have never had any desire to have any real-life experience with a CSI team, but unfortunately I got to witness one in action today. I was going to pick my son up from the local elementary school to which he is driven by bus from his magnet program when I hit a massive traffic backup on a small local street. At the top of the hill, it was obvious that there were at least five police cars and what looked like a news truck. By the time I had gotten up there it was also apparent that there was crime scene tape everywhere, the road had been narrowed to one lane by traffic officers, and the other lane was crawling with police, plus at least another four cars - some people investigating the ground, some trying to stop gawkers from looking.

I still don't know the whole story, since they routed us around the side of the elementary school and into the bus lane to wait for our children. In that time we saw several other police cars go by with their lights on, so I asked the school principal, who was out front, if she knew what was happening. She said she wasn't sure, but it seemed from what she had heard that a vehicle had struck a moving bicycle, then fled the scene. Given the amount of attention being given to the scene and the condition of the mangled bicycle we could see at the side of the road - I hadn't even recognized what it was at first - I suspect the rider must have died.

But I did get to see some equipment I never thought to see up close: cameras, forensic tools, the bags in which they were putting whatever it was they were scraping off the road. I'm sure there are people who can be objectively fascinated by these things. I can't. All I could think was that someone had likely lost a family member...and I feel that way every time I watch one of the CSI shows.
