Hello World!

Last week, I talked about 24 in Hello World, and this week I think it's time to pay some attention to that other espionage thriller, Alias. Though I'll admit to preferring 24 slightly, Alias is one heck of a good ride on a week-to-week basis. If you haven't seen the latest episode that aired in the U.S., beware spoilers ahead!

Alias changed format slightly at the beginning of this season; rather than ending each episode on a cliffhanger as the show's writers did for the first two seasons, they decided to take an approach more accessible to new viewers, introducing new bad guys (the Covenant) and making each episode somewhat more self-contained. However, by the end of the season (there are only two more episodes left in the season), longtime viewers have been rewarded by seeing the Rambaldi prophecies that factored so heavily into the first seasons become integral to the third season's plotline as well.

In what could sound like a bad soap opera twist, heroine Sidney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) learned her mother had another daughter--with her archenemy (one of them, at least), Arvin Sloane. The Alias writers have always had a knack for breakneck pacing--the discovery of Nadia, Sidney's sister coincided with Vaughn, Sidney's former lover, finding out that his wife, Lauren, is a member of the Covenant.

Does this show ever let up? Not really. In each episode, Sidney is jetting around the world and more often than not, getting into a gun or fist fight with some baddie or another. The constantly evolving plot keeps things fresh, and even if we've seen it fifty times before, it's never tiring seeing Garner kick some serious bad guy booty.

Tonight, CBS will show CSI: Miami's "Slow Burn". Here is TV Guide's description of the episode:

Delko and Alexx are nearly burned alive when they investigate the death of a hunter found shot near a supposedly controlled burn in the Everglades. The fire suddenly rages out of control and traps them. Later, a second body is discovered, and this time it's a young woman who looks to have been beaten to death.

On Thursday night, CBS will air the new CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode "Dead Ringer". Here is how TV Guide describes the episode:

Grissom discovers the dead body of a Los Angeles cop in the desert during a nighttime 120-mile relay race for police officers and the investigation turns up signs of foul play. Back at the hotel where the officers are staying, two more bodies are found in what appears to be a murder-suicide between male and female cops who may have been lovers. But Warrick and Sara believe it may be a double homicide.
