Petersen: 'I Couldn't Pass A Science Class If My Life Depended On It'

William Petersen (Gil Grissom) recently attended a Cubs game in Chicago, where the actor had the opportunity to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame and throw the first pitch.

Afterwards, the actor joined commentators in the booth, where he took the opportunity to talk a little about CSI. Petersen explained that the actors of the show weren't given intensive science training before the series' filming began. "We didn't do much beforehand. We tried to, but the show came on right away. So we've done a lot of catching up since it's started."

But that might be okay for Petersen, who claims science isn't exactly his forte. "I couldn't pass a science class if my life depended on it. I was terrible. And I actually have such a different appreciation for what they do in the science industry, you know."

Even though Petersen doesn't share Grissom's love for science, fans can't help but confuse the actor with his CSI persona. "We just got back from Italy [...] it was pretty weird over there, because we're walking around and everybody's speaking Italian and periodically they're going, 'Grissom! Grissom! Grissom!' And then they talk to me in Italian as if I should understand them, because my character over there is dubbed. So they all think I speak Italian, which of course, I don't."

The actor admitted there is one more thing he doesn't do. Friend Gary Sinise (Mac Taylor), who also got a chance to visit the booth at another game, has been touring with his band this summer. But chances are you won't see Petersen doing the same. "Gary's a good old friend. He's out running around with his rock band. Every actor now evidently has a rock band but me." The reason is simple: Petersen laughed while he admitted he can't play a single instrument. "Nothing. That's probably why."
