What starts out as a routine case in the third season opener of CSI: Miami turns tragic when one of the CSI team is killed in a shootout.

The Futon Critic recently revealed the details for "Lost Son", which airs on Monday, September 20th at 10pm Eastern time. A boat crash leads Horatio Caine and company to uncover the kidnapping of the son of a wealthy Miami couple. In the course of the investigation, Horatio and Tim Speedle go to a jewelry store, where a shootout commences and Speedle is killed (story).

The episode was penned by CSI: Miami executive producer Ann Donahue and supervising producer Elizabeth Devine. Donahue co-wrote the Miami/New York crossover, "MIA/NYC--NonStop" with CSI executive producers Anthony E. Zuiker and Carol Mendelsohn, while Devine was the scribe for second season's "Hard Time". The episode was directed by Duane Clark, who also helmed CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's fourth season episode "Early Rollout".

Here is how The Futon Critic describes the episode:

After a large yacht slams into a major Miami bridge, the CSIs find that the man steering the boat was shot and killed. The victim's wife reveals that their son had been kidnapped and her husband had gone to pay the ransom with $3 million worth of jewels. When Horatio's investigation leads them into a dangerous situation at a jewelry shop that may contain crucial evidence, he must face the unimaginable when one of the team is killed in the line of duty.

"Lost Son" features the return of Horatio's nemesis, Rick Stetler, played by David Lee Smith. The IAB officer was last seen in the second season finale, "Innocent". Presumably he will be heading up the investigation looking into Speedle's death.

Yelina Salas (played by Sofia Milos) will also be on-hand during the heated investigation. Boti Ann Bliss makes an appearance as DNA tech Valera, and Cristian de la Fuente's Sam Belmontes will turn up as well. Cynthia Wells (Brooke Bloom) will also appear in the episode.
