Hello World!

The CSI shows don't premiere until next week, but it seems like many shows have already premiered, both new and old. I know it seems petty to complain about the fall season starting early and maybe it's just that I'm not ready to admit that it's fall already. Where did the summer go? I've managed to catch a few of the shows I wanted to see, but I'll readily admit I've missed more than a few already.

Thanks to a promo copy of the pilot episode in my issue of Entertainment Weekly, I did manage to catch Jack & Bobby. I have to say, I was impressed. Sure, there were cliches--the handsome older brother/the nerdy younger brother, the controlling single mother, the insightful, thoughtful girl that the older brother likes, but overall the cast was appealing. And I was also surprised that it was revealed at the end of the episode which brother will become president...and what the fate of the other brother will be. The WB is rerunning the premiere on Thursday--I'd highly recommend checking it out.

I also caught half of the premiere of Joey. I did my darndest not to attach Friends-like expectations to this show, so for the most part I was not disappointed. Again, the cast carries the show, though there were certainly a few laughs. The best comedy premieres interest you in the characters while providing laughs and a little heart mixed in as well. Joey managed all three.

The only disappointment so far was Medical Investigation. It aims to be CSI in a hospital, and the concept is intriguing. Alas, the characters are not. The lead character, Steven Connor (played by Neal McDonough) is completely unlikeable--he's arrogant and abrasive, and lacks the charm of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's Gil Grissom or CSI: Miami's Horatio Caine. The rest of the cast is pretty typical--harried female second-in-command, inexperience ingenue doctor, and flirtatious but calculating publicist--and not especially interesting. The first case--a handful of people turn blue and fall ill, apparently after eating at the same restaurant--is not fully explained to the viewer. It's too bad--I had high hopes for this one.

Delko and Alexx are nearly burned alive when they investigate the death of a hunter found shot near a supposedly controlled burn in the Everglades. The fire suddenly rages out of control and traps them. Later, a second body is discovered, and this time it's a young woman who looks to have been beaten to death.

CBS will air CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's fourth season finale, "Bloodlines", on Thursday at 9pm. Here is TV Guide's summation of the episode:
