CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was yesterday announced as a nominee for the 30th Annual Saturn Awards.

The series was recognised by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films in the category of Best Network Television Series, Cinescape reported. This is the first time CSI has been nominated by the Academy, which seeks to honour the very best in genre entertainment. This extends beyond traditional science fiction and fantasy fare to include films and television in the action-adventure, thriller and mystery genres.

CSI's rivals in the Best Network Television Series category are an eclectic bunch. The group includes traditional space sci-fi (Star Trek: Enterprise), comic book sci-fi (Smallville), horror and fantasy in the form of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and thriller/action-adventure (last year's winner, Alias).

The television categories were dominated by the WB network, with Smallville and Angel scoring five nominations each. ABC's Alias earned four nods, as did the Sci-Fi Channel's Stargate SG-1. Despite breaking into the television categories for the first time, CSI was not recognised with any acting nominations.

The winners of the 30th Annual Saturn Awards will be announced on May 5. The full list of nominees can be found at Cinescape.

Why can't the CSIs get dates?
All work and no play makes Greg a blue boy.
It probably has something to do with the fact that every time Horatio Caine has sex with a woman, she dies.
Shower sex loses its allure when there's lemons involved.
These people collect body fluids for a living. Then again, if David the coroner can get laid...
They can get dates, I bet. We just don't see it.
Three words: Hank the Skank.
