David Caruso (Horatio Caine) and executive producer Ann Donahue recently talked about the ongoing development of Horatio Caine and where it might lead him this season on CSI: Miami.

Fans of the show saw Horatio deal with the alleged death of his brother for the past three years until it culminated with the discovery that Raymond Caine was still alive. Little brother Caine ended up leaving for Brazil with Horatio's sister-in-law and ladylove Yelina Salas, and according to Donahue, they are not planning to revisit the storyline any time soon.

"We finished that whole arc about Horatio trying to clear his brother's name, finding he's alive, and then sending him off to a good life with a woman, the love of Horatio's life," she told Zap2It. "There's nothing sweeter than giving up someone you love for someone else you love."

"We felt it was a perfect ending, and now we had to say, 'Let's peel back another layer. What got Horatio so dedicated to saving people?' And we said, 'What's the one thing you wouldn't believe about him?'"

That one thing promises to be this season's big secret and it'll take fans back to the episode "Cross-Jurisdiction," when Horatio revealed he once lost someone close. "When David said that line in the crossover -- I still remember, I was standing right there on this gorgeous little island with Miami in the background -- he said, 'I lost somebody once,' we really didn't know the whole backstory at the time, because we did our whole crossover so fast," Donahue revealed.

"Everybody thought it was Ray. But I have to tell you, at that time, there was no Ray. It was a mysterious lost person, but we knew it would be someone important."

Though Caruso did not reveal what Horatio's big secret is, he promises it'll be very emotional for his character. "You see this man becoming slightly frayed," Caruso said. "He's carried the weight of this, and the closure that he received at the end of last year -- he believed it might have been a healing, but in reality, it opened a trap door to something that he's not in total control of."

It'll no doubt be another season of ups and downs for Horatio Caine, but according to Caruso it might finally let fans know why Horatio is the way he is. "Ann takes three years with all these terrific brush strokes, to bring you back to what appears to be the source of that pain, the source of that conflict," he said. "It appears to be this broken family and the prodigal son, these things he can't really embrace because they're not his. And that appears to be what the source of all this is."

Why can't the CSIs get dates?
All work and no play makes Greg a blue boy.
It probably has something to do with the fact that every time Horatio Caine has sex with a woman, she dies.
Shower sex loses its allure when there's lemons involved.
These people collect body fluids for a living. Then again, if David the coroner can get laid...
They can get dates, I bet. We just don't see it.
Three words: Hank the Skank.
