She's A 'Saucy, Sarcastic, Sassy' New Scientist

There's a new girl in town.

Lauren Lee Smith will portray CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's newest forensic scientist, Riley Adams, starting in the third episode of the upcoming ninth season. "She's this young, very saucy, sarcastic, sassy girl," Smith explained to Entertainment Tonight. "She has a very wry, dark sense of humor, which I think is really fun, and I think that this is something we haven't seen on CSI yet, a character like this."

"The CSIs are understaffed at this point, and she's just sort of thrown into the mix," Smith said. "It's interesting because the first time I meet [Gil] Grissom [William Petersen], he's just looking for me. He knows I'm the new girl. He's like, 'You, come on, we gotta go, we gotta get to work.'" The interaction between the characters revealed something about Riley. "Through work during our first introduction scene, I think he sort of catches on that I'm kind of quirky in a way, so he always does these wonderful little looks," Smith explained. "He watches with such intensity, but it's also very comedic in a way."

"Everyone has just been so, so wonderful," Smith said of joining the show, adding that coming into a well-established series made her "a little bit apprehensive" to start with. "Everyone from day one has said what a family atmosphere everyone creates--cast, crew, everyone--that it's just such a lovely group of people, and I have been so welcomed by everyone," she said. "It's just been really, really lovely."

The original interview can be watched at ET Online.
