Sheriff Brian Mobley, a thorn in Grissom's side during CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's early years, is gone. Come season four, there's a new sheriff in town.

Rory Atwater, the new sheriff of Las Vegas, will make his first appearance in "Invisible Evidence", sources told CSI Files. Just like Mobley, he doesn't turn up at the crime lab to make a social call: there's been a screw-up in court, and the CSIs, more specifically Warrick, are getting the blame.

During a court hearing for a murder case, Warrick testified that he had recovered the knife used to kill the victim from the suspect's car. Unfortunately, the police officer who called him to the crime scene didn't secure a warrant to search the car, and the knife is now inadmissable as evidence. The judge gives Grissom twenty-four hours to gather more evidence, or the suspect will be released.

Atwater doesn't want controversy, especially if it makes him look bad. The new sheriff tells Grissom he's holding a press conference to announce that he's putting him in charge. If the CSIs can't come up with the goods, it looks like Grissom will have to wear the blame.

All the night shift CSIs are called in to go over the evidence from top to bottom. Catherine works the victim's apartment, while Warrick and Brass interrogate the suspect again. Nick and Sara are assigned to go over the car where the knife was found. There's just one problem, it's been flattened...
