David Caruso (Horatio Caine) had a rocky road to follow before he landed the role on CSI: Miami.

"I'm a fairly good example of both the ups and the downs of a career," Caruso told The Daily Telegraph. He won the lead role on NYPD Blue and then left the show at the beginning of the second season to pursue a film career. The film career didn't take off, and he found himself in a bad position professionally. At the time, Caruso said that he "was a guy who abandoned a TV show. I didn't care about people. They (industry heavyweights) didn't want to see good things happen to me." Caruso was lucky to get the role on Miami after making these decisions, and he is very appreciative of his current success. "Not everybody gets a second chance," he said.

Now that he is on CSI: Miami, Caruso makes an effort to keep the set positive and make it a happy workplace. "There has to be a specific environment there (on set) for it to be happy," he said. The success of the show is not something that he takes for granted. "I kind of understand it a little better than before and I understand what my responsibilities are," he said. "I've simplified things."

Caruso said that he is more comfortable with being in the public eye today than he was when he was on NYPD Blue. "Connection with the viewer is a very intimate and important relationship for me," he said. This includes people who walk up to him on the street. When a fan works up the courage to speak to him, Caruso said that "it's extremely flattering because you mean something to them as opposed to them just ignoring you - they can do that too."

Why can't the CSIs get dates?
All work and no play makes Greg a blue boy.
It probably has something to do with the fact that every time Horatio Caine has sex with a woman, she dies.
Shower sex loses its allure when there's lemons involved.
These people collect body fluids for a living. Then again, if David the coroner can get laid...
They can get dates, I bet. We just don't see it.
