CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has long had an association with rock music thanks to British Band The Who, who provided the show and its spinoffs with their title music. Now rock from over the Atlantic will be appearing again in the form of critically-acclaimed rock band U2.

Yahoo! News reported that the Irish band, whose new album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb will hit shelves on the 23rd of this month, have agreed to lend snippets of their tracks to appear in a number of upcoming episodes of CSI. Keen-eared viewers may have noticed that last week's episode "Swap Meet" featured a brief clip of U2's new single Vertigo near the start of the show last week.

"When a group like U2, who are so notoriously careful with licensing their music, agrees to rollout three tracks on a show like CSI, that's huge," said G. Marq Roswell, music supervisor on a number of films. "The show is a proven success and this is a way to expose [U2] to an entirely different demographic that may or may not be aware of their new release."

Hit artists have often released singles for film soundtracks – U2 themselves released their single Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me as part of the 1994 film soundtrack Batman Forever. Until recently though, not many bands with as high a current profile as U2 have opted to use their music in television, although this is a market Roswell feels is changing.

"[Band] managers are starting to realize that TV has such a huge audience. They know the demographics of the shows, and they see immediate sales spikes right after the show airs whether it is CSI or even a WB series," he said. U2 recently agreed also to have a mix of their song Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own on Fox's The O.C.. The episode will air on the 25th of this month.

Another mix of Vertigo is expected to appear in CSI's 100th episode, "Ch-ch-changes" on November 18th. Another as-yet undetermined track will appear on the following week's episode, "Mea Culpa".
