CSI: New York actor Hill Harper (Dr Sheldon Hawkes) wrote a piece on the Wall Street Journal website, in which he discusses his new book, The Wealth Cure: Putting Money in Its Place, and his recent health issues. Here’s an excerpt:

I have countless friends, old and new, who have allowed money to confuse their values, often pulling them away from other, more meaningful pursuits. The reality is wealth is an attainable goal: one that encompasses happiness and dream building. Shifting the way we envision wealth is first step in the cure. Creating a new definition of abundance can not only build our net worth but open the doors to joy and fulfillment.

Hill Harper’s (CSI: New York’s Dr Sheldon Hawkes) fourth book, The Wealth Cure: Putting Money in Its Place, hits store shelves tomorrow, August 23, and the actor faced a tough personal battle while he was writing it. Harper was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, but he is doing much better now. “Today, if we believe the doctors, I am doing pretty well,” he told Access Atlanta. Early detection was key, Harper said, and he did extensive research in addition to visiting multiple doctors.

This health crisis gave Harper a new perspective when he was writing The Wealth Cure, and he described America’s relationship with money as a “wealth virus”. “At the end of the day, this personal debt crisis we are seeing right now is across the board,” Harper explained. “Ultimately, we need to re-evaluate our relationship to money as a society and not just as individual groups or demographic groups.”
