Conserva Works Behind The Scenes To Make ‘CSI’ Great

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Co-producer Philip Conserva served as an associate producer for the pilot episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and he’ll still be with the crime drama when it returns for its twelfth season this fall. These days, Conserva spends most of his time working in post-production. “It’s getting it to the lab, getting to the editor to getting it on the air,” he explained to MassLive.com. “There’s video assembly and color correction, visual effects, finalizing the picture and the sound. It’s a lot of fun because what post-production is about is making it look and sound great.”

“We raised the bar from what the television production and experience was,” Conserva added, and he’s proud to have been a part of the CSI team since the show’s inception. “We put more of a cinema look and sound to the show. We were producing mini-movies, not so much producing TV episodes.”

Irwin Goes From ‘Sesame Street’ To ‘CSI’

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Bill Irwin’s turn as serial killer Nate Haskell on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is a far cry from some of his other roles. In fact, kids might recognize him from Sesame Street, where he played Elmo’s friend, Mr Noodle. “I’m still dealing with the irony that, after being a clown on children’s TV, I got this high-profile role as a killer!” Irwin told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He continued, “When they called me, Nate Haskell was supposed to be in just one episode. I think they liked to write for him … he’s very mentally ill, you know.”

The actor added that the CSI writers couldn’t “leave [Haskell] alive too long”; however, he could always return to the crime drama in a different guise. “I did talk to the producers about it, but I pitched a story about a man walking into the CSI office looking like Nate Haskell,” Irwin explained. “Maybe it’s Haskell’s brother, but he’s very nice and wants to help the CSIs. It’s just an actor trying for a way to have a job next season, but they smiled!”

Helgenberger: Fishburne’s ‘CSI’ Departure Was ‘Shocking’

Monday, June 13th, 2011

As CSI Files previously reported, Laurence Fishburne (Dr Ray Langston) is leaving the cast of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. For leading lady Marg Helgenberger (Catherine Willows), the actor’s departure came as a big surprise. “My manager called me late at night,” she told the Examiner. “It was shocking. I tried getting a hold of him. He’s out of the country right now, and I was just saddened by it.”

Helgenberger has enjoyed working with Fishburne on CSI over the past several seasons. “It was great. I was a fan prior to his coming on the show, and I’ll always be a fan,” she said. The actress went on to say, “I’m sorry that he’s not going to be back with us [on CSI]. I’ll miss him.”

Joy Takes On ‘One Of The Greatest Roles Of All Time’

Monday, June 13th, 2011

CSI Files previously reported that Robert Joy (CSI: New York’s Dr Sid Hammerback) would be starring in The Tempest later this month at Theatre by the Bay in Barrie, Ontario. “The idea of doing a play with Ruby, my daughter, was totally irresistible,” the actor told the Barrie Examiner. “But it would have been irresistible anyway—to be offered Prospero in The Tempest—which is one of the greatest roles of all time.”

The Tempest is one of those plays that combines drama and comedy,” Joy continued. “In the old-fashioned sense it’s definitely a comedy, because after going through all the trouble in the play you come out on top rather than, like Hamlet, dead on the floor. One of the reasons it’s considered one of the best plays is it hits so many different notes, of drama and comedy and magic and betrayal and slapstick.” He added, “It’s like the whole gamut in one play.”
